All You Can Eat Baby!

“All You Can Eat Baby!” - Those were the words of Meng the Master Ngyuyen as he recently went all-in in a World Poker Tour episode on the Travel Channel. Those same words described today’s Poker Tournament held by DSTS at Hutch’s BBQ in Pasadena. The ladies of DSTS held a no-limit Texas Holden Tourney which started at around 4:30pm and lasted up until 10ish pm. Not only was it a no-limit tourney, people who came by could eat All-You-Can-Eat BBQ!! How cool is that?

As for myself, I went all in a number of times and managed to find myself placing fourth in the overal field of approximately 60+ players. That’s WAY better than how I thought I would play. At one point entering the final table, I was actually the chip stack leader. Unfortunately I made a bad all-in call with the low pair thinking that my opponent was bluffing. The lessons learned I say! Overall though, it was a good turnout for the event and I thank everyone for showing up to the tourney. Until next time.. ALL YOU CAN EAT BABY!

Something you'd find on Judge Judy perhaps?

There’s this really strange child support case going on in Brooklyn. Here’s the basic story. A man and woman fall in love and decide to get married. The man puts his sperm in the sperm bank. They get divorced. The woman continues to pay the sperm bank bills and then undergoes in vitro with the man’s sperm. The woman then decides to try and get child support payments from the man (and yes - he did not know that she went ahead and used his sperm after they were divorced). This is hilarious stuff folks.. I can’t make this stuff up! Thanks William/Greg for this one too!

Germans discover world's oldest dildo

Yes - that’s right folks - scientists in Germany have found what appears to be the world’s oldest schlong. The phallic stone was created around 28,000 years ago and is “highly polished”. Check out the Register for more info.. hilarious! Thanks to William and Greg for this link!

The sign of the times

I was browsing the New York Daily News website just before and happened across this picture on the homepage. It’s a picture of a tourist bus in NYC being stopped by NYPD. All the passengers have their hands in the air as snipers and officers are pointing their guns at them. Why did this happen? Because the driver felt that several suspicious individuals came on board and may be up to no good. In the end, they were just tourists and nothing more.. but I think this image says it all these days.

Fun and crazy weekend..

This past weekend was a fun weekend of sports as Yvonne and I were involved in baseball, volleyball and softball. The weekend started off on Friday night with the Yankees/Angels game in Anaheim. Unfortunately the Yanks lost 6-3 that night with Al Leiter pitching for the Yanks. However, it was a fun night anyhow with many of the crowd chanting “Let’s go Yankees!” Many thanks to Adam for getting us free tix to the game!

On Sat, Yvonne and I played at the Happy Cowz outdoor 4 person grass tourney. It was ridiculously hot that day but we had a ton of fun in the sun! Our team didn’t make the playoffs but we put up a decent fight nevertheless. I got promptly sunburned and yes.. I am still in pain right now.

On Sunday, Yvonne and I headed out to Hermosa Beach to hang out at the beach, play some vball, and check out the AVP Open. We didn’t get a chance to see the womens’ finals but we did check out some of the vendors booths there. I then headed off to a USC softball practice game out on the east side. I’m slowly rediscovering softball again as a possible pastime to play in. I haven’t really been involved with softball since my days at Intel so it’s nice to be into it again here. The USC vs UCLA softball game will be on Aug. 6th so I hope to help out USC in some way or another.

That was it for the weekend. Lots of fun and lots of sun!

Battlestar Galactica Review - Valley of Darkness

“Valley of Darkness” picks up where the first episode of the second season left off - with the Cylon raiding party on board Galactica causing havoc, while the storylines on Caprica and Kobol continue on their respective paths. The episode ends up feeling something like a reincarnation of “Aliens” rather than a unique look into how Cylons fight once they are on board. But first, a recap of the story:

In the previous episode, we saw a Cylon raiding party crash into Galactica and Cylon Centurions come out of the craft. Well episode two shows more trouble is in store for the crew of the BSG. First, a Cylon computer virus has compromised the computer systems on board the Galactica and it’s causing power outages all over. Second, the Centurion force has split into two groups going after two main objectives on the Galactica. One group is looking to vent the ship’s air into space thereby killing all of the crew on board while the other group is looking to get to the ship’s magazine’s so they can turn the Galactica’s guns on the rest of the fleet. How do we know this? Through Col. Tigh as he has apparently seen this pattern before (through previous experiences? It’s not clear).

The episode starts with Lee Adama and the rest of the Viper squadron having just landed on board the BSG from the previous engagement. They run into a group of Centurions and one of them gets cut up by the sharp hands of a Centurion and promptly bites the dust. We soon learn that normal pistols are useless against Centurions - you need explosive rounds to kill them. Thus - people all over are running away from the Centurions as they go rampaging across the ship killing everything either with their hands or with their guns. Capt. Adama goes to the brig and tells the Marines there guarding President Roslin to bring her to the safest part of the ship - the sickbay disaster shelter. Meanwhile Adama and company go hunting for the rest of the Centurion raiding party.

Back on Caprica, Starbuck and Helo sneak into Starbucks’ old stomping grounds and relax to some music that Starbuck happens to have in a music player of some sort (looks like an old fashioned radio). There they take a moment to relax and talk about really … nothing in particular. Starbucks thinks back to how she never used to care about her possessions.. and yet here she is smoking a cigar and listening to her beloved music.

Meanwhile on Kobol, Balter continues down his road of madness as he foresees the death of his baby at the hands of Commander Adama. These images aided by Number Six’s intepretation of the Human race continues to reinforce the notion that Humans are traveling down a road of destruction. It is all happened before and it will all happen again. Then the scene pans to an area of Kobol where skulls are all over. Hmmm.. Meanwhile, Chief Tyrol returns with the medicine that they went to get in Episode one only to discover that Socinus is going to die anyhow.

Back on BSG, the Cylon raiding party is eventually stopped as Adama manages to hold off the last of the Cylons as they are about to get to the magazines. All is fine for now. Capt. Adama and Col. Tigh have a small confrontation at the end and it’s clear that their dislike for one another will be a continue focus of the show as Tigh sees Lee as being disloyal to his own father while Lee sees Tigh as not being fit for command.

There’s the recap of the show and now for some thoughts.

The episode was a strange blend of fast paced action mixed in with some slow paced drama. The action was primarily centered on the Cylon raiding party while the slower paced drama was occurring light years away on Kobol and Caprica. As much as I liked the notion of a raiding party on BSG, I felt that it could have been handled in a better fashion. First the episode felt like something from “Aliens” the movie. You have people screaming left and right, and bloody dead victims all over. Regular pistols were useless on the Cylons since the bullets didn’t have an effect.. Hmm which made me wonder about what Helo used on the Centurion in Season One on Caprica. If you recall, he killed a Centurion with a pistol but I don’t believe he used explosive rounds since the Cylon didn’t explode. Oh well..

What’s unfortunate is how the Centurions went about a path which was already familiar to older soldiers like Col. Tigh. With 40 years gone by, you would think that the Centurions would try a different tactic while on board the ship. Why not plant charges on the ship and blow up section after section. They’re stronger, faster and better equipped by the humans. Just destroy the ship’s internals and the rest of the fleet is useless. The Centurions certainly don’t look intelligent in this episode but look more like a massive killing machine - a stark contrast from the human looking Cylons such as Number Six or Sharon.

Speaking of the rest of the fleet - they were warned to stay away from BSG because of the raiding party. It would have been great to see how the other ships were dealing with the current problem. Everything is so focused on BSG that we don’t know how the 40,000+ individuals are feeling about this. BSG is their only hope for survival and it’s under direct attack - it would be good to focus in on the human drama of the rest of the fleet and their dilemma. Heck - the ships didn’t even move away from BSG!! What the heck?

Must I talk about Starbuck and Helo? The plot line on Caprica is getting a bit ho hum. Get the arrow back to the fleet already or at least back to Kobol. We spend way too long listening to Starbuck talk about her old pad and her old possessions. At the end, they end up in a Hummer look alike and drive off. Umm.. don’t you think someone is going to see them move around town in a vehicle? To me - the only good thing about this part of the story is the brief talk about how the Cylons were rounding up human bodies and cremating them.

Now on to Kobol which I think is the only really interesting part of the show. We see the continued demise of Balter as he starts to think that Commander Adama is going to kill his baby. Baltar slowly driven mad by Number Six and all the contrived stories that she comes up with for him. The problem is - he is having a harder and harder time discerning truth from fiction as the world around him is no longer the “real” world. Meanwhile, it’s also becoming evident that the remaining survivors on Kobol are soon going to confront a leadership issue.

One other small note - the audience is made to think that Cylons attacked the BSG forces on Kobol.. but you never actually see Cylons in the trees from the first episode. Who could this be actually?

In the end, everything works out of course but there’s death and destruction all over. Oh - another pilot is killed in this episode so the ever limiting supply of Viper pilots continues to plummet. Does anyone see this as a problem?

BSG is still a darn good series but this episode could have covered more ground than it actually did. The Caprica storyline is really wearing thin now so let’s hope that storyline moves a bit quicker in the future episodes. Also - let’s hope Commander Adama wakes up soon!

BattleStar Galactica Season 2 begins..

I haven’t had a chance to talk about the second season of Battlestar Galactica yet but here goes nothing…

So the second season of this critically acclaimed show began last Friday with the episode “Scattered” and the show instantly picks up where it left off with Adama bleeding from two gunshot wounds. Before I continue, I’ll give a brief synopsis of what happens:

* Col. Tigh takes command orders the fleet to jump to emergency jump coordinates because the new first officer fears that the Cylons are coming.. and indeed they are!
* After jumping to new coordinates, Galactica ends up in isolation having gone to a different set of coordinates than the rest of the fleet. As it turns out - Galactica had a new set of coordinates to jump to that the rest of the fleet didn’t know about. In order for Galactica to find the location of the fleet, it needs to go back to the original starting point and figure out the old coordinates that the fleet went off to. Problem - the Cylons are still there.
* President Roslin is thrown into the brig along with Captain Lee Adama
* Meanwhile, on Caprica, Starbuck gets feisty and tries to kill Sharon.. but Helo stops her and Sharon ends up escaping in the Cylon raider that Starbuck used to get to Caprica.
* On Kobol, Tyrol and company come under attack from some unknown force and lose a team member in the process. Baltar continues his conversations with Number Six and is amazed by the notion of the baby that he supposedly fathered.
* Back on Galactica, Tigh decides to network all the computers on the Galactica to speed up calculations of the old jump coordinates.. but this still means Galactica will need about 12 minutes of time to fight the Cylons as well as prevent the Cylons from cracking into the networking software.
* They decide to jump back to the starting coordinates and fight the Cylons in order to calculate the old jump coordinates. Lt. Gaeta figures out the old coordinates JUST in the nick of time and gets Galactica off to the old coordinates. However before he is able to do so, a new Cylon craft crashes into Galactica.. Hmm.. no explosion of any sort.. what could it be?
* During the entire episode, Tigh is having recurring flashbacks about his friendship with Adama and it’s revealed that Adama is the reason that Tigh is still with the fleet and even possibly still alive. Thus Tigh feels that he owes Adama everything .. this is not Tigh’s ship - it’s William Adama’s ship until he dies. Meanwhile, Adama nearly dies from the bullet wounds but the nurse saves him just in the nick of time.
* The episode ends with you the viewer realizing that the Cylon ship that crashed into Galactica actually has a Cylon raiding party. Oh dear…

OK… phew.. took me long enough to write all of that down. So the episode was quite convoluted as you see. One of the things that I’ve noticed about BSG is the fact that every episode has at least 4-5 different B plots going on at the same time. Compare that to Star Trek (where you have at most 2-3 storylines going on at the same time) and you realize why BSG is so much better. OK.. enough on that topic…

There are many changes to BSG in this second season - ranging from changes to the opening credits and music to the introduction of new characters on the show. There appears to be new threats and challenges to the colonial fleet - ranging from the shooting of Adama, to the imprisonment of the president, to the need in getting Apollo’s arrow to Kobol, to even threats on Kobol itself. Therein lies the beauty of the show - it’s complex and yet simple. The goal is the same from season to season - the fleet needs to survive and survival seems somewhat tied to the notion of finding Earth - whether it exists or not. Yet through it all - there’s the complex notion of man vs machine and the eventual melding of the two species; there’s religion and the notion of predestiny; and finally there’s a better understanding of the core characters that drive this show.

Season 2 shows us that things get ever more personal as Adama is critically injured and things are a mess around the fleet. I personally could have lived without the flashbacks but I recognize that they were important to show the loyalty that Tigh showed to Adama. It also shows that Tigh owes Adama LOT for where he is today which is arguably better than where he could have been.

There were some question marks or possible flaws that I’ve yet to fully explain:
* Why do they really need to go back to the beginning coordinates to figure out where the fleet jumped to? They should have the history of all the emergency jump coordinates on record.. so why can’t they jump to those coordinates? Or is jumping not so much about going to a set of coordinates but rather going a certain distance from where they are? If that is the case, then one should still be able to figure out where the fleet went off to WITHOUT the need to go back to the beginning. Oh well.
* How is it that the Cylon ship manages to survive Galactica’s firing zone?
* You’re telling 20+ Galactica fighters managed to hold off hundreds of raiders? Ummm ok.

Ok.. like I said - still the best show on TV outside of HBO. Sorry but Entourage and Six Feet Under are still better IMHO. However, the show is picking up nicely from where it left off a few months ago. It doesn’t wrap up the story line easily.. it makes things more difficult which is how it should be!

James Doohan dead at the age of 85

James Doohan, best known for the character “Scotty” on Star Trek, died at the age of 85 yrs old early this morning in his Redmond, Washington home. He had been fighting pneumonia as well as Alzheimer’s disease during that time. I will forever remember famous quotes from Scotty such as:
“I can’t change the laws of physics!”
“Laddy.. don’t you think you should rephrase that?!”
“Up your shaft!”
“A keyboard.. How quaint!”
“N C C 1 7 0 1 .. No bloody A, B, C, or D!”

We’ll miss you James!
